Area 5 Concrete Surveys

As part of their routine asset management programme, National Highways required a team to manage coring and testing surveys on the overbridges and underpasses in Kent and Essex. We were tasked with managing a programme of works and direct site supervision of contractors. The project involved risk assessing nighttime working, fatigue management, working from height, dust and noise suppression, and working near moving traffic. Because the size of the team was so small and the work deemed not-critical, we had to programme around other main contractors and negotiate use of their road closures.
We had the further restriction of having to close local authority roads as we couldn’t have local traffic driving over or under the bridges while we were working on them. So taking a lead from the previous projects we split into two teams, with the night team ensuring the works were being completed on time and liaising with the third party contractors to ensure the shift went smoothly, and the day team taking on the role of liaising with National Highways, their contractors, and the local authorities to coordinate works and road closures.
